City train information

Tren Urbano is a rapid transit system serving the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The system is relatively new and started working on the 17th^onDecember 2004 and today has 1 line serving 16 stations. The system has a total track length of 17.2 km (10.7 mi). The metro system is fully automated and has an average daily ridership of 43,800 passengers. It is propertyPuerto Rico Department of Transportation and Public Worksand manages itAlternative Integrated Transportation (ATI) Siemens AG.

Metro San Juan, also known asCity train, serves approx40,000 passengersevery day. However, it does not offer a24 hour service, instead of operating from5:30 to 11:30(Maryland).

Lines and stations

Tren Urbano, San Juan's subway system, has stations that do not separate doors between platforms and tunnels. Many stations are equipped with lifts and are wheelchair accessible, and also have regular Wi-Fi. The journey from Bayamón to Sagrado Corazón by train takes about 30 minutes.

The system consists of 16 stations distributed as follows: in the municipality of Baamón there are stations Baamón (at height), Deportiva (at height) and Jardines (at ground level). The Torrimar station is located in the municipality of Guaynabo. The route continues to the municipality of San Juan, where Martínez Nadal (low level), Las Lomas (high), San Francisco (high), Centro Médico (low), Cupey (high), Río Piedras (basement), University (basement ) , Pineapple (high), Domenech (high), Roosevelt (high), High King (high) and Sacred Heart (high).

Connections to other systems

Shipping has always been a vital part of San Juan because of its long coastline. Similarly, buses are considered the most efficient means of transportation to reach every corner of the city.

The Tren Urbano de San Juan's most important connection is with the Metro Urbano, a bus rapid transit system that connects Bayamón Station to the city of Toa Baja, covering a distance of 16.5 kilometers. This system was inaugurated on September 16, 2012, and the articulated buses were replaced by a dedicated lane on the José de Diego Highway (PR-22).

In addition, the Authority for Integrated Transit (ATI) oversees two other transportation systems besides the Tren Urbano de San Juan. One is the Cataño ferry line, which connects the municipality of Cataño with the islet of Old San Juan. The ferry operates non-stop and departs every half hour.

Another transport system is operated by the Metropolitan Bus Authority (AMA). This service connects San Juan residents via 30 routes, including three high-speed routes. Buses run from 5:00am. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday on most routes and from 6:00 a.m. until 20:00 on Saturdays and holidays.

Connections with the airport

Although the Tren Urbano does not run directly to Luis Muños Marín International Airport (the airport that serves Puerto Rico's capital), there is an express bus route. Express route E40 departs from Piñero Station and goes directly to Muñoz Marín Airport via the San Juan Mall. Therefore, arriving or departing passengers can use the Tren Urbano service.

Hours and frequency

The San Juan Urban Train operates six days a week, 365 days a year. The system starts working at 5:50 AM. and runs continuously until 11:30 p.m. According to the Authority for Integrated Transit (ATI), the train frequency during peak hours is every 8 minutes and 16 minutes during off-peak hours.

Specifically, the train frequency is as follows:
• From 6:20 to 8:20: every 8 minutes
• From 8:20 to 16:20: every 12 minutes
• From 16:20 to 18:00: every 10 minutes
• From 18:00 to 23:30: every 16 minutes

On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the frequency of trains is significantly reduced to every 16 minutes.

Prices, tickets and passes

San Juan city train fares are clearly defined and favor certain social groups. The San Juan Integrated Transit Authority (ATI) offers users different ways to purchase a ticket.

The most common way to travel on the Urban Train is a regular $1.50 ticket. This ticket gives passengers a two-hour time limit from entering the system during which they can transfer to a Metropolitan Bus Authority (AMA) bus. If the E20 bus route is selected, an additional fee of $0.50 is required.

However, four important social groups enjoy the benefits of using the system at half price.Students, people ages 60 to 74, Medicare beneficiaries, and people with disabilities can ride Tren Urban for $0.75..

City train travel is free for seniors over 75 and children under six.

There are also different tariffs corresponding to the period of validity of the ticket. These prices, with a specific timetable specified on the map, allow unlimited use of the Tren Urbano and AMA buses. Four types of tickets fall under this category:1-day pass for unlimited service for $5.00,weekly pass for $15.00,30 day pass for $50.00, gthe most comprehensive, a 90-day pass for $90.00. They can be purchased from ticket machines located throughout the system and can be paid for with cash, debit cards, or Visa and MasterCard.

An attractive feature of Tren Urban is the provision of parking spaces at stations, allowing passengers to leave their vehicles and travel by train. Eight stations along the route have car parks with 3,106 parking spaces. They are located in Baamón, Torrimaro, Jardines, Martínez Nadal, San Francisco, Sagrado Corazón, Cupey and Toa Baja Park &​​​​​​​​

In addition, the system caters to cyclists by providing bicycle parking at six stations, some near Tren Urbano stations and others closer to bus stops. Bicycle parking is available in Sagrado Corazón, Capitolio, Bayamón, Piñero, Iturregui, Covadonga (Old San Juan) and Martínez Nadal.

Recognizing the vital role of bicycles in modern and ecological cities, Tren Urbano de San Juan offers its users the Bici-Tren pass.

This service allows passengers to bring their bikes on the train. To obtain a Bici-Pass permit, it is necessary to request it at the Río Piedras station between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Requirements include attending a course detailing the rules for transporting bicycles on trains, being at least 18 years old (or having permission from a parent, guardian or representative) and providing a passport-sized photograph. Users must sign the rules as an obligation of compliance.

During peak hours (7:00am to 9:00am and 3:00pm to 6:00pm) up to two bikes can be transported to a cart. During off-peak hours, as well as weekends and holidays, up to four bikes are allowed. Folding bikes are allowed at all times.

future expansion

The numerous expansion plans for the Tren Urbano range from simple projects, such as creating new stations within the system, to more complex projects, such as creating connections to new transportation systems covering other parts of Puerto Rico, also known as Isla del Encanto.

The Puerto Rico Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP) is responsible for planning these extensions. Phase 1A, the first phase, includes the expansion of two stations of the current Sagrado Corazón station and the creation of two new stations: San Mateo and Minillas.

Other proposed extensions include a new line running from the Río Piedras station to the municipality of Carolina. There's also the San Juan Light Rail, a project that will connect all of Old San Juan to the Tren Urbano station at Sagrado Corazón and the rest of the city by tram.

Finally, a rail system is under construction in the municipality of Caguas, aiming to connect with the urban train at Cupey station. This would facilitate a rail connection between the city of San Juan and the southern part of the island. There are also plans for trains that will connect the major cities of the island with Tren Urban.

Advice

Although the Tren Urbano is quite easy to use, it is important to be aware of the system's operating hours, especially the 11:30pm closing time. m. If you have exceeded this time, you may have to rely on a taxi, which may be more expensive than expected.

If you plan to connect to the AMA bus system using a pre-purchased regular fare ticket, note the two-hour transfer limit. If this time expires, you will need to purchase a new ticket to re-enter the system.

San Juan Economic Zone:If you get off at Hato Rey station, you will be close to San Juan's Golden Mile, the heart of San Juan's financial district. This area is home to many of the island's major banks and financial groups, housed in imposing buildings that create an impressive cityscape.

Jose Miguel Agrelot Coliseum:This popular concert and performance venue is conveniently located next to Hato Rey Station.

University of Puerto Rico:Near Estación Universidad, you will find the largest campus of the University of Puerto Rico, which is home to many educational centers throughout the island. A notable attraction here is the clock tower, designed by architect Rafael Carmoega. Known simply as "The Tower", this landmark became a symbol of the student movements that originated from this university.

Stadion Juan Ramón Loubriel:Located near the Estación Deportiva, this stadium is a key venue for soccer, a sport that is growing in popularity on the island despite baseball being the more traditional sport. The local team, Bayamón F.C., plays here.

Muzej Francisco Oller:A short four-meter walk from Bayamón station will take you to the civic center of this municipality. Among the squares and historical sites, you will find the Francisco Oller Museum, located next to the Plaza de Recreo. Originally built in 1907 as the mayor's office, this museum is now a treasured local landmark.
