Earlier this year I had the pleasure of testing and reviewingDell XPS 15 (9530), so when I got the chance to check out the larger 17-inch version, I was more than happy to do so.

Kao i Dell XPS 15,Dell XPS 17 laptopThe line is designed as a mid-range multi-purpose computer that is more than equipped to handle modern office tasks as well as some more graphics-intensive programs. Overall, I have a lot of respect for this laptop, although there are a few minor gripes that should be noted.

This is a pretty expensive laptop, but that's often the case when you get those bigger screens with higher-performance processors.

You'll want to buy directly from Dell to have the most control over what CPU, GPU, and other components go into the laptop. However, you can also find this laptop on sale at Best Buy and Amazon in default configurations. Dell XPS 17 (9730): Design and build quality

Dell XPS 17 (9730) review: Power for creatives, but with strange limitations (3)

Dell has repeatedly shown that it knows how to make a laptop look powerful but understated, and that's the case again with the stylish XPS 17 (9730). It has the same general look and body as last year's model, which isn't surprising as Dell tends to use the same design for a few years before switching to a new one. In particular, this design has been used since mid-2020 (seeXPS 17 9710 reviewfrom 2021).

The latest series of XPS laptops are positioned as thoroughly modern devices thanks to the useful connections they provide. The XPS 17 (9730) has four Thunderbolt 4 ports that support DisplayPort and Power Delivery (two on each side). There is also an SD card reader on the right side. These links can help me a lot in connecting the devices I want to use. However, there are a few annoyances that mean I can't use all the accessories I want to use with the same ease: there are no built-in HDMI or USB-A ports.

Dell XPS 17 (9730) review: Power for creatives, but with strange limitations (4)

Instead, Dell includes a USB-C adapter with an HDMI port and a USB-A port. So when I decided I wanted to connect my wireless mouse (which uses a USB-A dongle), I had to first connect the adapter and then connect my dongle to the USB-A port. It's not difficult, it just adds another step that some may find inconvenient. Also, this might not be a problem for people who don't have USB-A accessories they want to connect. All in all, though, it still seems like an odd decision, as many computer accessories, including headsets, game controllers, and computer mice, still primarily use USB-A connections.

As for the HDMI port adapter, the latestComputer screensconnect to laptops and computer towers using USB-C connections. However, if you have an older monitor that you want to use with the XPS 17 (9730), you'll need to connect the adapter to the laptop first, then connect the HDMI cable to the adapter. This is an extra, clunky step in situations like this, and means you'll definitely need to bring an adapter with you if you plan to use this connection while traveling. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it could be frustrating for some users.

Dell XPS 17 (9730): Performanse

The XPS 17 (9730) has been my constant companion for the past week. I used it during work days to participate in video conferences, write articles and search for information on the web. Then after work I used it to play games, editphotoshopprojects and program monitoring. In all this time, it has always worked well with no hangs or freezes.

To get a more quantifiable read on the XPS 17's performance, I also ran a few benchmark tests, and in every case, the Dell laptop performed admirably. In Geekbench 5, it received a single-core score of 1693 and a multi-core score of 12001, which puts it below the XPS 15 (9530) but aboveAcer Predator Triton 500 SEand the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus (7620). It excelled even more in CrystalDiskMark's back-to-back SSD speed tests, where it proved faster with a write speed of 6421 MB/s and a read speed of 7109 MB/s. That makes it the second fastest device we've tested behind the XPS 15 (9530). Basically, this means you can run programs and save data very quickly.

(Video) Time To Say GOODBYE To The Dell XPS

Later, the XPS 17 (9730) scored above average in PCMark 10, with a score of 6893. The graphics benchmark results, while not the most impressive I've seen, were also very respectable, receiving a 3DMark Time Spy score of 9622. as well as a Cinebench multi-core score of 14,217 with a single-core score of 1,680.

These results tell you that the XPS 17 (9730) can handle basic programs and tackle some more demanding tasks with ease. Its editing capabilities also make it ideal for creatives working in graphics-intensive programs like Photoshop orprofessional premiere. So if you're thinking of using it as a computer for your family, hobby or business, then it should be able to handle just about anything you want.

Dell XPS 17 (9730) review: Power for creatives, but with strange limitations (12)

While not specifically designed for gaming, the XPS 17 (9730) also manages to be a decent entry-level to mid-range model.gaming laptop. The first thing I did to test its gaming capabilities was to download and update the latest Nvidia graphics drivers and then reboot the laptop. After that I downloaded Steam and startedCiberpunk 2077in it, which is one of the most challenging PC games you can play right now.

Thanks to the powerful RTX 4070 GPU, the laptop can display beautiful graphics without lag. I ran the in-game benchmark at high texture quality at 1920 x 1080p and the laptop was able to average 54 FPS, sometimes dropping to 60 FPS or even lower. That's not bad at all considering this isn't a gaming laptop. The fans went crazy almost from the start, which doesn't surprise me, but it managed to play my games better than many other laptops I've tried. Just be aware that after long gaming sessions, performance may drop. For example, after playing Cyberpunk 2077 for several hours, I ran another in-game benchmark and got an average of 22.4 FPS. Lowering the graphics settings improved the frame rate at this point, but it wouldn't be a problem on one of the best gaming laptops out there.

Dell XPS 17 (9730): Zaslon

Dell XPS 17 (9730) review: Power for creatives, but with strange limitations (13)

I was surprised that the XPS 17 (9730) doesn't have an OLED screen option, especially since it's an option for the smaller XPS 15. This means that the XPS 17's screen still shows shades of gray instead of true black, and they don't look as vibrant as much as an OLED panel can be. However, the 17-inch FHD+ (3840 x 2400) LCD touchscreen displays colors with beautiful effect and plenty of detail. The laptop is ideal for working on digital designs, photo editing and other creative projects.

After using the colorimeter to analyze the display, I was not surprised to find that in my tests it produced 100% sRGB, 100% AdobeRGB and 98% P3. These are all fantastic results and show that the XPS 17 (9730) has an excellent color palette, which you can tell just by looking at it.

I also looked at the brightness and contrast capabilities of the panel. This laptop has a 500 nit display, which helps it succeedverybright, which makes it usable in bright areas or even outdoors. Of course, if you don't want it to be bright, you can turn it down quite a bit and it's always thereNight lightfeature in Windows 11 if you need to remove blue light to help your eyes in darker settings.

Since this is an LCD screen, I checked for backlight leakage by wearing a black screen protector and looking at the screen in a dark room. However, I'm happy to say that the XPS 17's screen looks perfectly consistent and has no weird variations or patterns.

Dell XPS 17 (9730) - battery life

Dell XPS 17 (9730) review: Power for creatives, but with strange limitations (14)

To test the battery life of the XPS 17 (9730), I used the laptop as my primary work computer for a week, using it in my spare time to play games or watch shows. Overall, it lasted pretty well throughout the workday, but you'd have to plug it in towards the end of the day if you wanted to use it overnight.

To get an accurate indication of battery life, I put the laptop in a cool room, set the screen to 50% brightness, and then ran the PCMark 10 battery test, which forced the laptop to perform basic tasks office, such as making video calls, opening programs and using the Internet. This saw it last eight hours and 59 minutes, which means the battery life isn't amazing, but there's nothing to complain about.

However, it's worth noting that the XPS 15 (9530) lasted longer in my tests, clocking in at 10 hours and 16 minutes at the same brightness and in the same room. That extra juice could be due to the smaller laptop's OLED screen, which is one of the key differences between the XPS 17 and XPS 15 configuration options.

Dell XPS 17 (9730) review: Power for creatives, but with strange limitations (15)

After draining the battery, I turned on the XPS 17 (9730) and watched its charging speed. The laptop reached 100% while still on and with the screen brightness at 50% after charging for about three hours. It's not the fastest reload time we've seen, but it's certainly not the worst.

Dell XPS 17 (9730): keyboard and touchpad

Dell XPS 17 (9730) review: Power for creatives, but with strange limitations (16)

I almost never thought about the keyboard and trackpad of the XPS 17 (9730), which is exactly what you want, and it turns out that it works. Tapping the trackpad quickly places the cursor where I want it, and the left and right click buttons don't activate on my wrist while I type like they do on other laptops.

The buttons snap nicely and are well spaced, making them easy to access. As usual, the row of keys at the top presents various options for useful functions, such as mute or adjust the volume, pause or play media, toggle the keyboard backlight, change the screen brightness and open the settings menu. That way I could easily interact with these common commands without having to dive into configuration menus.

The empty key in the upper right corner of the keyboard is the power button and the fingerprint reader. as with everyoneWindows 11device with this feature, I had to go to Settings and set up fingerprint recognition for it to work. Once set up, it always read my finger easily and allowed me to quickly sign in to my profile (you can also use Windows Hello facial recognition via webcam).

Dell XPS 17 (9730): Camera and Sound

Dell XPS 17 (9730) review: Power for creatives, but with strange limitations (17)

My biggest issue with this XPS 17 (9730) laptop is the same as the XPS 15 (9530). Both are part of Dell's flagship line of laptops with impressive processors and displays, but they have outdated 720p cameras. On devices this expensive and advanced, you'd expect them to have at least 1080p cameras.

As it stands, the image quality from the front camera isn't bad as colors are displayed accurately, but it's not as sharp as it could be. It also gets grainy quickly if there isn't much light in the room.

Dell XPS 17 (9730) review: Power for creatives, but with strange limitations (18)

When it comes to speakers, the Dell XPS 17 (9730) offers excellent sound quality for a laptop. It features a quad-speaker design that uses two 2.5W woofers and two 1.5W tweeters to deliver clear, powerful sound. As with the XPS 15 (9530), sitting in front of the XPS 17 (9730) while listening to music or watching a show makes sounds seem to exist in the area around you, rather than obviously coming from the device. .

(Video) 2022 Dell XPS 17 (9720) Review

To further improve the sound quality, you can download the free Waves MaxxAudio Pro sound pack to adjust the equalizer for the ideal balance. I find it very easy to use and test the performance directly from this program. As always, if you want deeper bass or an overall more powerful audio experience, you should plug it inthe best speakers for pcon your laptop.

Dell XPS 17 (9730): The competition

Dell XPS 17 (9730) review: Power for creatives, but with strange limitations (20)

You can find by comparisonDell XPS 13 protiv XPS 15 protiv XPS 17that one of the other configurations better suits your needs and has many of the same features. as you can see in meDell XPS 15 (9530) review., this smaller laptop looks and functions similarly to the XPS 17 (9730), but offers an OLED display option (which the XPS 17 doesn't) and has longer battery life. It's a great option for someone who doesn't need that big of a screen and wants to save money.

Of course, if your goal is to save money, consider last year's Dell XPS 17 or maybe even an older one:Dell XPS 17 (9710). They won't perform as well as the 2023 version, but will still be very reliable and powerful in their own right. In any case, these older versions can be found cheaper as they are not the latest and greatest versions.

Looking outside of Dell's lineup, the HP OMEN 17 is probably the closest competitor to the XPS 17 (9730). Both use an Intel Core 17-13000 series processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 GPU. However, unlike the Dell laptop, the HP offers a gorgeous 17-inch OLED screen to look at. Of course, Dell tends to be a little easier on the wallet, so you'll have to spend more to get HP's offering, which is a true gaming laptop.

Dell XPS 17 (9730): Should I buy it?

Dell XPS 17 (9730) review: Power for creatives, but with strange limitations (21)

You should buy it if…

  • You want a big screen in a reliable laptop.
  • You want a laptop with great performance.
  • You want a versatile laptop that can handle graphically demanding programs and games.

You should not buy it if...

  • You want an OLED screen.
  • You would prefer a higher resolution camera.
  • Looking for something that doesn't cost that much.

The Dell XPS 17 (9730) is a powerful laptop thanks to powerful processors and high read and write speeds. It's up to almost any task, making it perfect as a work laptop, a family laptop or a station for creative projects. Thanks to the powerful GPU, it also has decent graphics capabilities to handle all your hobbies and gaming desires.

It's worth noting that it only has a 720p camera, which is much lower resolution than expected for a laptop of this price and build. Also, while the four Thunderbolt 4 ports are incredibly useful, some users may find it strange that the XPS 17 only allows access to the USB-A and HDMI ports when the supplied adapter is in place. However, if you're looking for a stunning and versatile laptop, you can't go wrong with the XPS 17 (9730).
