Premier League season 2022-23. it brought so many surprises that even the result that many predicted ended up looking like this.

When it comes to the official Premier League awards, Erling Haaland was named Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year. Correctly. He set a new record for the number of goals scored in one season in the Premier League. Enough talk.

Manchester City won their third consecutive Premier League titleafter spending most of the season admiring Arsenal's surprise package while almost everyone else had an underwhelming season.

Seriously, look at the table. Did you have Chelsea with the fourth fewest goals in the league and the sixth fewest wins? Did Tottenham go into last week with Europe uncertain? What if Liverpool need a boost to potentially finish fifth?

Have you had Newcastle, Brighton and Brentford competing for European places all season? What about Leicester City, West Ham and Wolves at the bottom for most of the campaign?

Twelve teams changed managers at least once. The Premier League record for most goals in a season has been broken. Liverpool won the games 7-0 (against Manchester United!) and 9-0, but lost three times by three or more goals and twice went four games without a win.

In other words, the "What's going on?" by Jim Halpert? gif was the unofficial sponsor of the 2022-23 season.

So who and what was the best and worst of this wild and hairy era? Andy Edwards and Nick Mendola joined our head writer Joe Prince-Wright to pick everything from the best XI to the biggest disappointment.

JPW: Nick Pope – a key player in Newcastle's front four and made some impressive saves when the Magpies were so solid at the back.

Nick Mendola: Alisson Becker - Only Bernd Leno has kept more goals than the Liverpool defender and the Reds are currently more than 11 away from xGA.

JPW: William Saliba – What a season from the French powerhouse. Arsenal's end-of-season collapse coincided with his injury and that speaks volumes for how important he is.

Nick Mendola: Saliba: Ruben Dias was the best part of the league's best defence, Kieran Trippier a hot option, but Arsenal's sharp decline without Saliba says it all.

Young Player (U-23) of the Year

JPW: Bukayo Saka – tore teams apart all season and was unable to play at times. He and the rest of Arsenal's youngsters are very much in sync.

Nick Mendola: Saka: He's faded a lot over the course of the season, but he's still only 21 and has double-digit goals and assists.

JPW: Mikel Arteta – departure from 5^onA'2^{North Dakota}That's a big leap and Arteta deserves a lot of credit for bringing the Gunners back to the Premier League. With a more complete squad, he can bring them back into title contention.

Nick Mendola: Eddie Howe — Pep is the best for this (maybe ever), but Howe is at least a year ahead of schedulemeasure from Newcastle in the Champions League. He kept the Magpies level while missing signing Alexander Isak for November, December and January. Newcastle have only lost once in league games, and that was the doubleheader between Liverpool and Manchester City.

Better performance than a relegated or relegation-threatened team

JPW: Romeo Lavia – The teenager is a star player and is certain to leave relegated Southampton to finish in the top six this summer. At 19 and already a member of the Belgian national team, Lavia is on her way to the top.

Nick Mendola: Amadou Onana: It could have been Tyler Adams had the American not been injured, but Onana has been full of action and will be looking to save the King even if Everton fall at the final hurdle.

JPW:Kaoru Mitoma from Brighton to Leicester. Amazing internal cutting ability and what a finish. One of the players of the season (along with fellow Gaviotas Moises Caiceda and Alexis Mac Allister) as Brighton stunned everyone and qualified for Europe.

Nick Mendola: There were some sensational pieces of teamwork and some dazzling from distance, and I'll go for the latter when surprise rocket-launcher Michael Keane scored a late equalizer between Everton and Tottenham.

The best signing is not Erling Haaland

JPW: Joao Palhinha – His importance to Fulham is huge and he is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. The Cottagers will benefit from keeping hold of the Portuguese midfielder this summer.

Nick Mendola: Gabriel Jesus deserves a mention and Sven Botman doesGOODthere, butfor me it's Casemiro. Apart from a couple of red cards, it completely changed the impression of what it meant for opponents to see Manchester United on the fixture list.

JPW: Brighton-Termination in European positionsafter losing Graham Potter at the start of the season it is a success. And to do it the way they play, with flowing, exciting and attacking football, is even better. Roberto De Zerbi added edge to his attacking play and while Brighton will lose a number of stars this summer, his signing was impressive and owner Tony Bloom has created an exemplary club. Any young player on the planet will want to sign for Brighton now.

Nick Mendola: Brighton. Shouldn't I say Man City? Perhaps, but the Seagulls were forced to find a replacement for Graham Potter and did so, taking seasons away from Pascal Gross and Solly Mart, making Moises Caicedo and Alexis McAllister England's most desirable midfield duo and even introducing Kaoru. Mitoma and Evan Ferguson as their next stars for the market and academia.

JPW:Manchester City-Arsenal 4-1– The title favorites met in what looked to be a decisive match and the superstars shone for City.

Nick Mendola:The first Manchester derby this yearThis should probably be the date we agreed the season would arrive. Manchester United have made it four wins in a row after Erik ten Hag's slow start and there were no eyes in the Premier League that weren't focused on it. Then Erling Haaland scored three goals and provided two assists, telling the league to forget the Golden Boot and Manchester that any red tide will have to wait a while.

Andy Edwards: Harry Kane scored his 267th goal to become Tottenham Hotspur's top scorer.

Biggest disappointment of the season

JPW: Leicester City – From pushing for the top 4, getting into Europe and winning the FA Cup to relegation with almost the same team. Very bad season.

Nick Mendola: The Big Six. He could fend off three traditional giants, and perhaps even four, given what Arsenal have been doing since the start of April. Did you know that the Gunners are no longer in the top two in terms of expected points? Whether it's Liverpool's mentality and excuses, Chelsea's maelstrom of everything or Tottenham's shock loss of Harry Kane (and possibly Antonio Conte) - well…Wow.

The biggest craziness of the year

JPW: Tottenham-On the collapse of Antonio Contewith the brilliance of Harry Kane and so many wonderful and terrible performances scattered throughout, the best Jekyll and Hyde team in the Premier League. He has no idea what he will produce from week to week.

Nick Mendola: Chelsea: Here are the teams who have won fewer games than the Blues with a game in front: Forest, Leicester, Leeds, Everton, Southampton. We had questions after the change of ownership meant the unscheduled departures of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger, and even more so after Chelsea bought more than a dozen players for more than $10 million and found only one who was sure to be part of the picture. in general (Enzo Fernandez We would also include Marco Cucurello, but he is said to be restless).

Firing Thomas Tuchel didn't work for Chelsea, and Joe is right that firing Ralph Hasenhuttl wasn't the answer, but at the risk of sounding biased, I'm sticking with Jesse Marsch.The 49-year-old American was firedless than a week after the January transfer window closed, and even if you think he should be gone, the club haven't had a replacement ready for three games. Eventually bringing on Javi Gracia to bolster their defence, Leeds kept a clean sheet on their debut, a 1-0 win over Southampton, and never repeated the trick.
